We’re Getting A Spyro The Dragon Cartoon, Sort Of

Poor Spyro might have gotten a little lost in the crowd in the Skylanders video game series, but he’ll be at the head of his class in Skylanders Academy, a new animated series coming to Netflix this spring. Look how happy he is!

As upset as hardcore Spyro the Dragon fans (I just typed that) continue to be over his purple dragon majesty’s use as the Skylanders‘ series stepping stone to fame, the chances of us seeing the little guy in an animated series prior to Toys for Bob’s toys-to-life game were pretty much nonexistent. Now we’re getting two seasons of computer animated Spyro and friends, backed by some pretty big talent to boot.

First we’ve got Justin “I’m A Mac” Long voicing our little dragon friend. Did you know Spyro was originally voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, the Taco Bell chihuahua? He’s also been voiced by Elijah Wood.

Joining Long on voice duties are Ashley Tisdale as Stealth Elf, Jonathan Banks as Eruptor and Norm MacDonald as Glumshanks, with additional voices by The Diamond Minecart, Susan Sarandon, Daniel Wu, Parker Posey, James Hetfield, Catherine O’Hara, Bobcat Goldthwait, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jonny Rees, Harland Williams and Richard Horvitz.

The show is being produced by Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk, co-presidents of Activision Blizzard Studios, established last year to create film and TV projects based on the game publisher’s stable of properties.

The pair will be joined by Sander Schwartz, who has been making animated television since Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light back in 1987. France’s TeamTO is handling animation.

Sure, the Netflix animated series will say Skylanders all over it, but if you close your eyes and plug your ears through the opening titles it should be pretty easy to image it’s called Spyro and Friends. And who knows? Now that Crash Bandicoot is a Skylander, maybe we’ll score a cameo.
